Finding Joy in Every Page: My Interview with Menifee’s Own Author and Teacher, Alex Friedrichs
There are moments as a journalist that stay with you long after the cameras stop rolling, the kind of moments that remind you why you do what you do.
My recent Voices of the Valley interview with Alex Friedrichs, a Menifee teacher and author of the children’s book Sweet Rescue, was one of those moments.
From the minute Alex sat down, I could feel his warmth. He spoke with such quiet passion about his students, his writing, and his hope that his book would bring simple, pure joy to children. His words came from the heart:
“My one goal for this whole process was just for a kid to open up a book and to just experience joy while reading it… to have a favorite character, and when it’s done, say, ‘Okay, I’m gonna read that again.’”
-Alex Friedrichs
That line touched me deeply. It reminded me of how powerful a story can be, how a single book can ignite imagination, build confidence, and spark a lifelong love of learning.

The Teacher Behind the Story
Before becoming an author, Alex built an incredible teaching career right here in Menifee at Callie Kirkpatrick Elementary. His students know him as someone who believes in them, challenges them, and celebrates their potential. During our interview, he shared a story about a former student who went on to act in movies and eventually invited Mr. Friedrichs to join a creative project with Amazon Studios.
Listening to him talk, I realized that Alex’s greatest legacy may not just be his book, it’s the lives he’s shaped in the classroom. His dedication, his belief in the next generation, and his willingness to say “yes” to creative opportunities are what make his story so inspiring.
A Book That Brings Families Together
Sweet Rescue isn’t just a children’s book; it’s an experience meant to be shared. Alex talked about parents reading it aloud at bedtime, creating those tender, quiet moments that become lifelong memories. His voice lit up when he mentioned his hopes for his young readers to be turning pages with excitement, and discovering a new favorite character.
That joy, that spark, is exactly what he hopes to give back to the world.

Gratitude and Community
At the end of our conversation, Alex took a moment to share something that completely humbled me. He thanked me for what The Menifee Experience is doing for our community, capturing stories, highlighting local talent, and connecting people through shared pride in our hometown.
Those words filled me with gratitude. Because that is what this work is all about, shining a light on the people who make Menifee such a vibrant, inspiring place to call home.
A Sweet Reminder
As I wrapped up the interview and discussed our beautiful town with Alex. I felt proud, not just of what Alex had accomplished, but of the spirit of Menifee itself. A place full of dreamers, doers, teachers, and storytellers.
Alex Friedrichs reminds us all that joy can be found in small things, in the turning of a page, the curiosity of a child, or the courage to share your passion with the world.
If you haven’t yet, I encourage you to check out Sweet Rescue on Amazon, share it with a child in your life, and remember: the best stories are the ones that make us feel connected.
