The air was brisk and the wind cut through the crowd, but the energy was anything but cold, their voices carried powerfully up and down the street. Even with the morning chill and gusts of wind whipping through the picket line, spirits remained high as passing cars honked in support, a reminder that this moment represents more than just a labor dispute, it’s a call for recognition and respect in healthcare.

A major labor action is underway today affecting Kaiser Permanente facilities across California, including those serving the Inland Empire and surrounding areas such as Murrieta. Tens of thousands of unionized healthcare employees have entered a five-day strike, citing concerns over wages, staffing levels, and care quality.

Below is a detailed breakdown of why the strike is happening, how it may affect Murrieta-area patients, and what’s at stake in the negotiations.

What’s Happening: Scope and Timing

  • Start / End: The strike began 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 14, 2025 and is slated to conclude at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 19, 2025, unless an agreement is reached earlier.
  • Who Is Participating: About 31,000 members of the United Nurses Associations of California / Union of Health Care Professionals (UNAC/UHCP) are walking out. These include registered nurses, advanced practice clinicians, pharmacists, physician assistants, rehabilitation therapists, dietitians, midwives, and other specialty health professionals.
  • Union Scope: This group is part of the broader Alliance of Health Care Unions, which may see up to 46,000 Kaiser employees strike across California, Hawaii, and Oregon.
  • Key Locations: The strike covers numerous Kaiser hospitals and clinics statewide, including ones serving Riverside County and the Inland Empire region.

Why the Strike: Union Demands & Kaiser’s Response

Union’s Position

Union leaders describe this walkout as the largest in UNAC/UHCP’s 50-year history and say it is necessary to protect patient care and the viability of healthcare professions.
